In the attempts to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) of a vehicle by using acoustic and sound-proofing materials, car manufacturers often have to compromise on other aspects of the vehicle, like fuel efficiency. Hyundai tackles this problem by applying Active Noise Control (ANC) and Active Control Mount (ACM) sound technologies to cover NVH on their vehicles. Hyundai’s own Active Sound Design (ASD) technology is also soon to be incorporated on their vehicles.
In order to reduce NVH, Hyundai uses a three point engine mounting system, designed external parts in a way to reduce friction, and applies acoustic materials in various parts of the vehicle, such as sound absorbing carpet inside the vehicle. Additional NVH reduction is provided by the ANC technology which analyzes the frequency, phase and size of the sound entering the body and then returns counter sound waves through the speakers. Hyundai’s ASD allows the driver to choose an engine sound according to their preference or the drive mode selected.
While most of NVH management is about reducing noise and vibration, Hyundai has also considered the converse situation – how the lack of engine sound could pose a threat to pedestrians. Electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles produce virtually no engine sound, so pedestrians are not able to hear oncoming vehicles. Virtual Engine Sound System (VESS) emits an engine sound through the electric/hybrid/fuel cell vehicle’s speakers so that pedestrians can hear them and avert any accidents.
